What do the current mutations mean for the coronavirus pandemic?


As it spreads, it's mutating, taking on new characteristics, that can make it harder to fight. New variants found in South Africa and the UK are more contageous - straining health services. Japan is trying to isolate a new variant from Brazil. There's no proof any of them are any deadlier, but the virus is constantly changing, and could eventually make vaccines less effective.
South Africa just became the first African nation to surpass the 1 million mark for coronavirus cases, authorities worry about the spread of the new and potentially highly contagious variant detected in the country.

US President-elect Joe Biden has expressed interest in returning to the Iran nuclear deal. Israeli Ambassador Jeremy Issacharoff told DW that preventing Iran from getting a nuclear missile is the "bottom line."

Iran accused Israel of the assassination of its top nuclear scientist, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh during his funeral service on November 11. Israel has since warned its citizens in the region to be cautious of potential retaliation in light of Iranian threats.

The Israeli ambassador to Germany, Jeremy Issacharoff, spoke to DW about the tense situation in the Middle East and highlighted his country's determination to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear missile. With regards to Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) agreement between Iran and several Western states, and incoming US President-elect Joe Biden's plan to return to the deal, the Israeli ambassador expressed his government's skepticism, referring to a "string of violations" of the deal on the Iranian side.
With movie theaters forced to shut down and moviegoers stuck at home during the pandemic, streaming has gained massive popularity. "THE STAND" actor Jovan Adepo and executive producer Benjamin Cavell say there's still a place for theatrical releases. "What I miss most about the theatrical experience...is that sense of community, experiencing a story with a group of people," Adepo said.
