NEED THAT MORE THINGS MIGHT BE OFF. >> JENELLE, THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH, KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. >> WE ARE BACK WITH OUR PANEL NOW. I WANT TO ASK YOU, MANDELA, AS A WISE MAN ONCE TOLD ME, THERE IS NO WAY TO SEPARATE THE ROOTS OF A TREE FROM ITS LEAVES. THERE IS NO DOUBT THAT THIS COUNTRY WAS FOUNDED ON RACIST IDEALS, AND WHILE GREAT PROGRESS HAS BEEN MADE, THE ROOTS REMAIN THE SAME. MANDELA, OUR WHITE SUPREMACIST IDEALS AND INGRAINED ANTI- BLACKNESS, BAKED INTO EVERY AMERICAN INSTITUTION, INCLUDING POLICING BREAKABLE? CAN WE ACTUALLY SNAP OUT OF THE SYSTEMIC NATURE OF RACISM? OR IS THIS JUST WHO AND WHAT WE ARE? >> WE HAVE TO SNAP OUT OF IT. IF WE DON’T, WE WILL BE COMPLETELY DESTROYED. THIS NATION WILL IMPLODE IF WE DON’T SNAP OUT OF THE WHITE SUPREMACIST IDEOLOGIES THAT GOT US TO THIS POINT WHERE WE ARE, I WANT TO REMIND PEOPLE, THINGS CAN GET WORSE. IT IS MY HOPE THAT THEY DO NOT, IT IS MY HOPE THAT PEOPLE STEP UP AND RECOGNIZE THE MOMENT AND SEE THE NEED FOR CHANGE, WE USE THE ROOTS ENTRY ANALOGY, I ALSO WANT TO POINT OUT, FOR THOSE WHO STILL SUBSCRIBE TO THE BAD WHO STILL SUBSCRIBE TO THE BAD APPLE THEORY WHERE THERE ARE JUST A HANDFUL, WE NEED TO THINK ABOUT THE GROWING CONDITIONS WHICH LED TO THOSE BAD APPLES, AND THAT IS THE WAY TO PREMISES IDEOLOGY YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT. SO, IF WE DON’T SNAP OUT OF IT IT WILL ONLY BE TO OUR OWN PERIL. >> NICOLE, THE NATURE OF WHAT WE ARE DEALING WITH HERE IS NOT JUST POLICING, IT IS HEALTHCARE, IT IS EDUCATION, IT IS ENVIRONMENTAL. WE ARE SEGREGATED BY OUR BODIES, BUT THE AIR THAT WE BREATHE IS ALSO SEGREGATED. BREATHE IS ALSO SEGREGATED. DO YOU BELIEVE, IN YOUR HEART OF HEARTS, GIVEN ALL YOUR EXPERIENCE AND EVERYTHING YOU UNDERSTAND ABOUT HOW THE SYSTEM WORKS, DO YOU THINK WE CAN BREAK OUT OF IT? IS THERE ANY WAY TO MOVE PAST IT, MOVE THROUGH IT? CHANGE SOCIETY IN ANY REAL AND MEANINGFUL WAY? >> I WOULD SAY THAT CAN AND WILL ARE TWO DIFFERENT THINGS. YES, WE ABSOLUTELY CAN. WE KNOW HOW. WE KNOW ALL OF THE RESOURCES THAT WENT INTO CREATING THE INEQUALITIES THAT WE INEQUALITIES THAT WE EXPERIENCE, BUT, DO WE HAVE THE WILL? JAMES BALDWIN SAID THAT WHITE PEOPLE HAVE TO BE WILLING TO GIVE UP THEIR WHITENESS, AND I DON’T THINK THAT WE HAVE SEEN ENOUGH WHITE AMERICANS IN POWER WILLING TO DO THAT. YOU KNOW, WE THINK ABOUT POLICE VIOLENCE. POLICE ARE THE AGENTS OF THE STATE WHO WORK MOST MOST INTIMATELY IN BLACK COMMUNITIES, BUT THEY ARE THE FACE OF A MUCH LARGER SYSTEM OF OPPRESSION WHICH YOU JUST TALKED ABOUT. THEY ARE, YOU KNOW, BLACK PEOPLE ARE SEGREGATED IN TERMS PEOPLE ARE SEGREGATED IN TERMS OF HOUSING AND SCHOOLS, WE HAVE THE WORST HEALTH EFFECTS OF THE HIGHEST POVERTY RATES, WE HAVE THE HIGHEST UNEMPLOYMENT RATES. ANYTHING THAT YOU NAME, WE SUFFER FROM IT THE WORST, AND THAT IS BECAUSE WE -- IN THIS COUNTRY. DO WE HAVE THE WILL TO DO WHAT IS NECESSARY? I DON’T THINK SO. BUT, WE CERTAINLY CAN IF WE CHOOSE. WE COULD SEND SOMEBODY TO THE MOON AGAIN. IF WE WANTED TO DO SOMETHING BETTER, RETURNED. >> DON, WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THAT? I ALSO WANT TO ADD, HOW MUCH OF THAT INTIMACY IS BETWEEN POLICE AND PEOPLE, AND ALL THE WAYS IN WHICH WE ARE SEGREGATED, BUT HOW MUCH OF WHAT WE EXPERIENCE DAY TODAY, DO YOU THINK IS THE RESULT OF UNCONSCIOUS BIAS, PEOPLE MEANDERING THROUGH LIFE NOT REALIZING THAT THEY HARBOR ANTIBLACK SENTIMENT, AND HOW MUCH OF IT IS ACTUAL CONSCIOUS RACISM CONSCIOUS ANTIBLACK SENTIMENT? >> I THINK IT IS NOT POSSIBLE NECESSARILY TO QUANTIFY IN PERCENTAGES. I WILL SAY THAT, BOTH ARE ABSOLUTELY AT PLAY. EVERY DAY. PEOPLE DON’T REALIZE THAT THEY HAVE THESE BIASES, AND LIKE I SAID, MY FRIENDS ARE REALLY REALIZING IT NOW. COMING OUT NOW AND THEY REALLY ARE UNDERSTANDING, THE IMPACT OF INACTION, SEEING THAT INACTION, BECAUSE THEY ARE GOOD PEOPLE DOING GOOD THINGS DURING THE DAY, THEY ARE NICE TO PEOPLE THAT THAT IS ENOUGH TO TEAR DOWN SOMETHING THAT HAS BEEN SYSTEMATIC, AND HAS BEEN, NOT ONLY INSTITUTIONALIZED BUT IS CODIFIED, IN THE ARTICLES OF THE CREATION OF THIS COUNTRY. WE WERE NEVER INTENDED TO PRODUCE DEBATE IN THIS WITH ANY SORT OF EQUALITY. SO IT’S GOING TO BE A FIGHT, IS GOING TO BE A STRUGGLE AT AGAIN, THIS MOMENT THAT WE ARE IN RIGHT NOW, THAT WE HAVE TO BE VERY HONEST ABOUT, AND HAS BEEN THIS CONFLUENCE OF ALL OF THESE THINGS COMING TOGETHER AT THE SAME TIME, WITH A TERRIBLE PRESIDENT AND ENABLERS AROUND HIM, WHO DON’T HAVE THE COURAGE TO STAND UP TO HIM. AT A TIME WHEN PEOPLE WANT TO TALK ABOUT LOOTING, AND ON THE OTHER HAND, THEY DON’T WANT TO TALK ABOUT TRILLION DOLLAR TAX CUTS AS WE HAVE SEEN, JUST ONE PERCENT OF THIS COUNTRY. LET’S HAVE THE HOLISTIC CONVERSATION. WE NEED TO BE HONEST ABOUT WHERE WE ARE AND HOW WE GOT HERE. IF WE CANNOT DO THAT, IF WHITE PEOPLE AREN’T WILLING TO HAVE THESE KINDS OF CONVERSATIONS, AND HOLD EACH OTHER ACCOUNTABLE TO THAT, THE ABILITY TO HOLD THE LEVERS OF POWER, I DON’T KNOW HOW THIS WILL CHANGE. BUT THIS IS ABSOLUTELY THE MOMENT TO IMPRESS UPON US THAT IT HAS TO. LIKE MANDELA SAID, WE ARE LOOKING AT VERY BAD OUTCOMES. THE RIOTS HAPPENED IN 92, AFTER THE TRIAL, WE STILL HAVE THREE OFFICERS WHO HAVE NOT BEEN CHARGED, AND ONE WHO MAY BE FOUND NOT GUILTY. MAY BE ACQUITTED. WE MAY NOT BE OF THE GREATEST POINT OF THIS YET AND THAT IS TERRIFYING. >> MANDELA, YOU HOLD SOME LEVERS OF POWER, YOU ARE THE LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR OF WISCONSIN, WHICH INCLUDES WISCONSIN, WHICH INCLUDES MILWAUKEE, WHICH HAS AMONG THE HIGHEST BLACKMAIL INCARCERATION RATES IN THE COUNTRY. I WANT TO ASK YOU, WHAT IS NEXT. WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE, AND DO YOU THINK THAT WHITE AMERICA WANTS TO CHANGE, THAT MANY IN BLACK AMERICA ACTUALLY WANT? >> THAT IS THE THING. I THINK A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE WAKING UP TO A REALITY THAT THEY NEVER HAD TO EXPERIENCE, IF I COULD GO BACK TO THE QUESTION THAT YOU BROUGHT TO DONNA I THINK MOST OF US HAVE BEEN ABLE TO GO THROUGHOUT THEIR ENTIRE LIVES WITHOUT EVER HAVING TO WORRY OR THINK ABOUT IT. BUT, ON THE POLICY FRONT, THERE ARE SO MANY PROPOSALS THAT HAVE BEEN BROUGHT UP AND ON THE POLITICAL FRONT THERE ARE STILL A GUESS AT THE BEGINNING PEOPLE WHO DO NOT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT IT. IN MY POSITION, I THINK ABOUT, THE ISSUES I AM EXPECTED TO CARRY, THOSE THAT I WILL CARRY REGARDLESS BECAUSE THEY ARE IMPORTANT. WHETHER IT IS A WOMEN’S RIGHT TO CHOOSE HER ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES, I CARRY THOSE ISSUES BECAUSE THEY ARE IMPORTANT TO ME. BUT RARELY IS RACIAL JUSTICE A PART OF THAT CONVERSATION. AND WHAT I FEEL THAT I CAN DO, BECAUSE WE DO HAVE ELECTIONS COMING UP, IT’S NOT JUST THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION, WE HAVE LEGISLATIVE RACES ALL ACROSS WISCONSIN AS WELL. WE HAVE OTHER RACES GOING ON, WE HAVE OTHER RACES GOING ON, AND, FROM OPPOSITION? I’M NOT GOING TO ENDORSE ANYBODY THAT IS NOT TAKE ON RACIAL JUSTICE AND THAT’S WHAT I PLAN TO DO. PEOPLE WHO ARE RUNNING FOR STATE REPRESENTATIVE, STATE SENATOR THEY DON’T WANT TO TALK ABOUT RACIAL JUSTICE AND NOT ENDORSING THEM, BECAUSE WE HAVE TO BUILD NOT JUST POWER, THE POLICY AND STRUCTURE, TO MAKE SURE THAT THESE ISSUES GET ADDRESSED, BROUGHT TO THE TABLE AND TALKED ABOUT IN MEANINGFUL WAYS. >> THANK YOU, SO MUCH, TO OUR BEST -- OUR GUEST, DON CHEADLE, NICOLE HANNAH JONES, LUKE LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR MANDELA VINES. WE WANT TO KEEP HEARING YOUR VOICES. IF YOU ARE BLACK, IN AMERICA, PLEASE SHARE WITH US WHILE YOU ARE OUT RAILING FOR GEORGE LLOYD. GO TO /OR PROTEST. THANK YOU AGAIN ALL FOR JOINING ME IN THIS VERY HONEST ROCK CONVERSATION. SOMEWHERE IN AMERICA TONIGHT, THE SPARK OF GREAT CHANGES FLICKERING. IT IS UP TO EACH OF US TO DECIDE WHETHER WE LET IT BURN OUT, OR WE NURTURE THAT BURNING CHANGE. WHEREVER YOU ARE RIGHT NOW, WE HEAR YOU. THANK YOU, AND GOOD NIGHT.
