Mr Pompeo wore a face mask as he got off his plane to be greeted by officials in Israel. He removed it during key talks with the Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu and Knesset Benny Gantz, who will become prime minister in a rotation deal in 18 months' time.

A White House official said the ousting of State Department Inspector General Steve Linick came on the advice of Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. Democrats told NBC News that Linick had opened an investigation into possible misconduct from Pompeo in terms of a government employee who may have been doing personal errands both for him and his wife.

President Donald Trump said Monday he preferred for government employees to wash Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's dishes if his wife or child weren't present, to allow him to do his work.

The president was responding to a question about Pompeo recommending that Trump fire a State Department inspector general who was investigating Pompeo's potential misuse of government resources.
