>>> AND THE WHITE HOUSE EMPLOYEE WHO SERVED 11
PRESIDENTS PASSED AWAY FROM COVID-19. HOW HE IS REMEMBERED
BY THE BUSHES AND THE OBAMAS. >>> THIS IS "NBC
NIGHTLY NEWS" WITH LESTER HOLT. >>> GOOD EVENING,
EVERYONE. THE FBI LATE TODAY SAID THIS
MORNING'S SHOOTING AT A TEXAS NAVAL BASE APPEARS TO
BE AN ACT OF TERROR. A GUNMAN THAT TRIED TO
STORM THE BASE WAS SHOT AND KILLED, BUT
NOT BEFORE HE INJURED A SAILOR. THE LETHAL
CONFRONTATION RAISING DEEPER CONCERNS AS IT COMES LESS
THAN SIX MONTHS AFTER A DEADLY ATTACK AT A FLORIDA
NAVAL BASE WHICH THE FBI JUST THIS WEEK
PUBLICLY REVEALED HAD LINKED TO AL QAEDA.
PETE WILLIAMS HAS BREAKING DETAILS.
>> Reporter: SHOTS RANG OUT AT 6:15 AT THE CORPUS
CHRISTI STATION. THEY IMMEDIATELY WENT
ON LOCKDOWN. LAW ENFORCEMENT
OFFICIALS SAY A MAN DROVE UP TO THE MAIN GATE.
WHEN A SECURITY OFFICER APPROACHED HIS CAR, HE
SHOT HER WITH A HANDGUN. BECAUSE SHE HAD ON A
BULLETPROOF VEST, SHE WAS NOT SERIOUSLY
HURT. THE MAN THEN GOT OUT OF THE CAR
WITH A RIFLE AND WAS SHOT BY MILITARY POLICE.
IT WAS TERRORISM, THE FBI SAYS. >> WE HAVE DETERMINED
THAT THE INCIDENT THIS MORNING AT THE
NAVAL AIR STATION IN CORPUS CHRISTI IS TERRORISM
RELATED. WE ARE WORKING DILIGENTLY WITH
OUR STATE, LOCAL, AND FEDERAL PARTNERS ON THIS
INVESTIGATION WHICH IS FLUID AND EVOLVING.
>> Reporter: LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIALS SAY THE
GUNMAN WAS FROM THE AREA, IN HIS EARLY 20s.
THEY FOUND TERROR RELATED COMMUNICATIONS ON HIS
ELECTRONIC DEVICES. THE FBI ALSO SAID IT
WAS FOLLOWING REPORTS THAT ANOTHER
PERSON IN THE AREA MAY HAVE BEEN CONNECTED TO TODAY'S
SHOOTING, BUT THERE'S NO FURTHER WORD ON
THAT. THIS IS THE SECOND TERROR
RELATED ATTACK ON A U.S. NAVAL TRAINING FACILITY
SINCE LAST DECEMBER'S DEADLY SHOOTING IN
PENSACOLA, FLORIDA. LESTER? >> PETE WILLIAMS
TONIGHT, THANK YOU. >>> THIS EVENING, THE
CDC IS UPDATING GUIDANCE ABOUT HOW
CORONAVIRUS IS TRANSMITTED, SUGGESTING IT MAY NOT
AS EASILY SPREAD IN SOME OF THE WAYS WE
THOUGHT, WHILE EMPHASIZING ANOTHER RISK.
GABE GUTIERREZ REPORTS. >> Reporter: TONIGHT,
WITH GLOBAL COVID-19 CASES TOPPING 5
MILLION, THE CDC HAS UPDATED ITS GUIDANCE, NOW
EMPHASIZING THAT THE CORONAVIRUS DOES NOT SPREAD
EASILY ON CONTAMINATED SURFACES, REASSURANCE FOR ANYONE
DILIGENTLY WIPING DOWN PACKAGES AND GROCERIES.
>> WHAT THE CDC WAS TRYING TO DO IS EMPHASIZE AGAIN HOW
IMPORTANT CLOSE PERSONAL CONTACT IS.
THE SURFACES CERTAINLY CAN BE A SOURCE OF THE
CORONAVIRUS, BUT IT'S A SMALLER ROAD TO TRANSMISSION.
IT'S THAT CLOSE PERSONAL CONTACT WHICH IS PUTTING
PEOPLE AT RISK. >> Reporter: WITH SUMMER AROUND
THE CORNER, THE CDC SAYS THERE'S NO EVIDENCE THE VIRUS
CAN BE SPREAD TO PEOPLE THROUGH WATER
IN POOLS, HOT TUBS, OR PLAY AREAS.
THIS HOUSTON ER DOCTOR SAYS SOCIAL DISTANCING IS
STILL CRITICAL. >> THE KEY TO
PREVENTION OF LARGE SPIKES OF THIS VIRUS OR
LARGE INCREASES OR THE SECOND WAVE IS SOCIAL
DISTANCING, GOOD HAND HYGIENE, AND WEARING YOUR
MASK OUT IN PUBLIC. >> Reporter: AHEAD OF MEMORIAL
DAY WEEKEND, TSA IS ROLLING OUT NEW SAFETY MEASURES AT
AIRPORTS ACROSS THE COUNTRY, INCLUDING
TELLING PASSENGERS TO TAKE PAPER BOARDING PASSES, PLACE
THEM DIRECTLY ON READERS INSTEAD OF
HANDING TO THE TSA OFFICERS. THE TSA IS ALLOWING
ONE LIQUID HAND SANITIZER UP TO 12 OUNCES
PER PASSENGER, AND IF A PROHIBITED ITEM IS
FOUND IN A CARRY ON IN X-RAY, THE TRAVELER
MIGHT BE ASKED TO LEAVE THE SECURITY AREA AND
REMOVE IT THEMSELF. THE BATTLE PLAN
AGAINST COVID-19 IS CLEARLY STILL A WORK IN
PROGRESS. TODAY WE LEARNED RESEARCHERS
FROM UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON FOUND AT NURSING
HOMES, TESTING IS MORE EFFECTIVE THAN SCREENING
FOR SYMPTOMS BECAUSE SOME PATIENTS WERE
ASYMPTOMATIC. LAST MONTH, WE FIRST TOLD YOU
ABOUT ANDREA'S 89-YEAR-OLD FATHER THAT SUFFERED
FROM DEMENTIA AND UNDERLYING
CONDITIONS AT AN ASSISTED LIVING FACILITY IN
MASSACHUSETTS. SADLY, HE SINCE PASSED AWAY FROM
CORONAVIRUS. >> WE WERE ABLE TO BE BY HIS
SIDE THROUGH A WINDOW, WE WERE SO CLOSE TO HIM, IT
WAS AS THOUGH WE WERE AT HIS BEDSIDE.
>> Reporter: AGAIN, THE CDC IS EMPHASIZING WHILE IT
IS POSSIBLE TO TRANSFER THE VIRUS THROUGH
SURFACES, PERSON TO PERSON TRANSMISSION IS MUCH
MORE LIKELY, AND SOCIAL DISTANCING IS
KEY. LESTER? >> GABE GUTIERREZ THIS
EVENING, THANK YOU. >>> IN THE RACE TO
DEVELOP A VACCINE, A HUGE BOOST TONIGHT
FROM THE U.S. GOVERNMENT FOR AN EFFORT AT OXFORD
THAT'S SHOWING PROMISING INITIAL RESULTS.

CORONAVIRUS VACCINE. ASTRAZENECA SAYS THEY

MONEY HELPS US DELIVER 100 MILLION DOSES TO
AMERICAN CITIZENS. >> Reporter: THE TEAM DEVELOPING
THE VACCINE AT THE UK OXFORD UNIVERSITY TELLING NBC
NEWS THEY'RE STUNNED BY SO MUCH
SUPPORT SO QUICKLY. >> IF YOU SAID TO ME ALL OF THAT
WOULD HAPPEN IN A MONTH, I WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THAT WAS
WILD, FANTASTIC. WE'RE THRILLED.
>> Reporter: HUMAN TRIALS BEGAN IN APRIL WITH MORE
THAN A THOUSAND PARTICIPANTS. SOME GOT THE COVID-19
VACCINE, A CONTROL GROUP DID NOT. NOW BOTH GROUPS' BLOOD
IS BEING CHECKED FOR ANTIBODIES TO SEE IF
THE VACCINE HAS BEEN EFFECTIVE. THE RESULTS ARE
EXPECTED IN TWO TO SIX MONTHS. >> HOW HOPEFUL ARE YOU
OF A POSITIVE RESULT? >> WE WERE HOPEFUL A
MONTH AGO. I DON'T THINK THE PROBABILITY OF
THE VACCINE WORKING HAS CHANGED AT ALL.
WHAT WE HAVE SEEN IS EXPECTED. >> Reporter: TESTS AT
THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN LAB ON SIX MONKEYS WERE
POSITIVE. THE VACCINE STOPPED THE VIRUS
FROM ENTERING THE LUNGS, THOUGH DIDN'T PREVENT
INFECTION. PRESIDENT TRUMP HAS CALLED FOR
VACCINES TO BE DEVELOPED AT WARP SPEED, BUT SOME
TONIGHT WARNING MOVING TOO FAST IS DANGEROUS.
>> YOU CANNOT AFFORD NOT TO DO IT RIGHT BECAUSE SO
MANY LIVES ARE AT STAKE. >> Reporter: TONIGHT,
NBC NEWS IS TOLD HUMAN TRIALS WILL BE
EXPANDING SOON. ASTRAZENECA SAYS IT IS PREPARING
FOR 30,000 PARTICIPANTS, INCLUDING CHILDREN.
LESTER? >> THE WORLD ANXIOUSLY WATCHING

THERE. THIS IS A SMART VIRUS THAT
SPREADS EASILY FROM PERSON TO PERSON.
>> Reporter: THE REST OF ALABAMA BEGAN REOPENING DAYS
AGO, DATA FROM THE POLICY LAB AT CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL AT
PHILADELPHIA PREDICTED IT WAS A SPOT TO WATCH.
YOU'RE DOING A PREDICTION, IT IS NOT 100%, BUT DO
PEOPLE ACCEPT WHAT YOU'RE PREDICTING?
>> IT IS SORT OF LIKE A WEATHER FORECAST.
WE'RE PROJECTING OUT FOUR WEEKS, BUT IT IS HELPFUL IN
GUIDING WHAT MAY HAPPEN IN THE NEXT
COUPLE OF WEEKS. >> Reporter: THE NEWEST
PHILADELPHIA MODEL FORECASTS HOT SPOTS IN HOUSTON,
DALLAS, AND ACROSS TENNESSEE. ANOTHER HOT SPOT IN
FLORIDA WITH MORE THAN 48,000 CORONAVIRUS

TOUTING NEGATIVE TEST RESULTS. >> I TESTED POSITIVELY
TOWARD NEGATIVE. RIGHT?
NO. I TESTED PERFECTLY THIS MORNING,
MEANING I TESTED NEGATIVE. >> Reporter: IT IS
