Markets not buying Trump administration is ready for coronavirus
Anthony Scaramucci and Catherine Rampell talk with CNN's Don Lemon about how Trump's lack of credibility is affecting how the markets are reacting to the coronavirus fears.
At first, Americans were told they had nothing to worry about. Then the guidance from the Trump administration rapidly started to change. A day after saying reopening the economy would be the charge of state governors, President Donald Trump used his public comments to undermine them. He tweeted support to protesters demanding an end to stay-at-home orders and blamed governors for not having the materials needed to conduct testing for coronavirus. The Trump administration has cut funding for U.S. nonprofit research into coronaviruses in bats. The renowned EcoHealth Alliance saw its $3.7 grant revoked over their ties to the Wuhan Institute of Virology, which Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has accused of engineering the novel coronavirus in one of its labs. Professor Robert Garry of the University of Tulane joins CBSN to talk funding cuts, conspiracy theories, and the importance of cataloging the hundreds of different coronaviruses found in Chinese bats. Dr. Joshua Sharfstein, Vice Dean for Public Health Practice at the Johns Hopkins School for Public Health, joins Andrea Mitchell to discuss reporting from the New York Times that the Trump administration is privately projecting that daily case totals could rise to 200,000 by early June, and daily deaths could double to about 3,000, even as states begin to ease lockdown measures.
