Prompted by widespread reports of police beatings of protesters, heavy-handed enforcement of safe-distancing measures and other abuses, rights groups and academics are raising the alarm over what they see as a squeeze on  basic human rights in Africa's fragile democracies. Multiple nights of violence between Police and residents in Paris's poorest suburbs have raised questions about tactics used by French police. Residents say enforcement of a nationwide lockdown has been the latest example of heavy-handed policing. But the police Prefecture disputes this telling euronews that they don't respond to broad accusations.

As correspondent Anelise Borges reports, the latest clashes are reopening old wounds.
Prominent civil rights attorney Ben Crump has been hired by the family of a black woman who was fatally shot by Louisville, Kentucky police in her home. Breonna Taylor, was killed on March 13th. (May 13)
