Death penalty sought in killing of Alabama woman


Prosecutors plan to seek the death penalty against a man charged with capital murder in the shooting death of the stepdaughter of UFC fighter Walt Harris, authorities announced Monday. Ibraheem Yazeed is charged with killing Aniah Blanchard. (Dec. 3)

An emotional day in the Brendt Christensen trial in Peoria in the U.S. state of Illinois. The family of Zhang Yingying has been testifying during the death penalty phase. At one point, Zhang's father broke down in tears as did members of the jury and Christensen, who has already been found guilty of killing Zhang. A jury must now decide whether Christensen should spend the rest of his life in prison, or be sentenced to death. CGTN's Dan Williams has the latest from the court.
In response to President Donald Trump's call for tougher penalties on violent crimes, the U.S. Justice Department this week lifted a federal moratorium on the death penalty. VOA's Brian Padden reports this controversial decision has been denounced by opponents as immoral and inhumane, but advocates say imposing the ultimate punishment for the ultimate crime is the right thing to do, and is supported by a majority of Americans.
Shots were fired overnight through the office window of the attorney for a white police officer acquitted in the killing of an unarmed black teenager.
