Coronavirus pandemic in S. Africa: Obesity increases risk of death from Covid-19

#SouthAfrica is struggling to cope with a spike in #Covid-19 cases that has already overwhelmed many hospitals. The government has an ambitious vaccination plan that targets those at risk, including #obese people.

This week FRANCE 24 will be bringing you a series of reports about #France's efforts to protect the nation against #Covid-19. The country is on track to reach its target of vaccinating 1 million people by the end of January and has enough doses to increase the total to 2.4 million by the end of February, Health Minister Olivier Veran said on Monday. FRANCE 24's Marie Schuster reports on how health workers have been reacting.
America has just had its deadliest day yet, with more than 3,000 dead from Covid-19. By comparison, the official death count of the 9/11 terrorist attacks was 2,977. Hospitals across the country are overwhelmed with new cases, from the so-called Thanksgiving surge. Patients are being treated in trucks, tens, and even hospital lobbies. One ICU nurse warned that infections from Christmas season gatherings could be even more devastating than Thanksgiving.
The United States hit the grim milestone as hospitals begin to buckle over an influx in cases and the new variant becomes present in eight states.
New confirmed #coronavirus infections over the past 24 hours in #France jumped to 13,713 on Tuesday, from 3,411 on Monday and 8,083 last Tuesday, health ministry data showed. French President Emmanuel #Macron said last month that daily new infections need to fall to around 5,000 and the number of people in #ICU to below 3,000 in order to lift the lockdown on Dec. 15.
