Calif. beaches brace for Memorial Day weekend


Millions of Californians are heading into the Memorial Day weekend with both excitement and anxiety after restrictions to control the spread of coronavirus were eased across much of the state. (May 22)

New Jersey beaches have reopened to visitors for Memorial Day weekend with social distancing guidelines encouraged. NBC's Maura Barrett has details.
During his daily coronavirus briefing, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that with state beaches opening for Memorial Day, there will be a limit of how many people can enter the beach due to social distancing rules.
Coney Island's famous beach and boardwalk will be open for Memorial Day Weekend, but there's a long list of rules, including a ban on swimming, and sports like Frisbee will not be allowed. Scenes of empty airports at LAX were telling of the pandemic's impact on holiday travel; last year, 43 million Americans took trips for Memorial Day Weekend. This being the first weekend many will venture out after 2 months at home, health officials are nervous of increased COVID-19 transmission. Stay safe!
